Elated & Outraged!

This morning I'm mixed with the overwhelming joy of our new President Obama, and the gut wrenching outrage of the Arizona Proposition 102 passing!
Yesterday it was all about the Polls. I've never watched the Polls before. In fact it was usually movie time or some other activity to stay away from the T.V. stations. But not yesterday. We even ate dinner in front of the T.V., hoping and awaiting news of Barack Obama becoming our President. We even stayed up and watched his acceptance speech.

I've never voted before either. I know. I hear the gasping sounds already. I'm just not very political as it does not interest me. However, this year was different. Could my one little vote really make that much of a difference. Yes it can. Will others like me stand up and vote? Yes they will. I even wondered if I should do it or not, but then kept hearing "Yes we can." I voted. I voted for Obama and it felt good.

So why am I so outraged about Prop 102 passing? This is what is about: "This initiative would amend the Constitution to define marriage as only a union between one man and one woman. Supporters say a constitutional provision would protect the sanctity of marriage by preventing judges from overturning the existing state law prohibiting same-sex marriages."

Nobody has the right to say who you can marry, date or have sex with. Who's business is it anyway? Is it really going to hurt you (those opposed) to see two people of the same sex married? Is it going to ruin your day? If so, you need to get a life. You also need to take a long hard look in the mirror and realize that you're a human being just like EVERYONE else is and we ALL have the same rights.

A family is NOT just a "wife, husband & child" as all the commercials to promote this ridiculous Proposition exclaims. A family is a group of people, large or small, living together, raising one or more children with love, guidance, peace and happiness. Who are those to judge what a family is? This just sickens me to no end and I'm ashamed of those ignorant Arizona voters who passed this. All I can say to you is Karma.

My dad taught us that everyone is equal and I taught my boys the same. I have friends from all walks of life. I've had gay friends all my life, past and present, and one of my very best friends is my son Jeremy (my son Jason is my friend too, not meaning to exclude him). I don't introduce my boys as "this is my straight son & this is my gay son" - these are my boys and I'm very proud of them both! I only state this because the other day when I was talking with Jeremy about this, I was fuming. It takes a lot to get me angry, but this one got me. I told him that I may blog about this, he said go for it!

If and when the time comes, I want my son to be able to marry without fear, prejudice, ignorant laws and so forth. Jeremy and all the GLBT community deserve the SAME rights as everyone else. "We the People" need to stand up and make this happen. I will be doing my part to see this through. Will you?

Happiness, Peace & Love to ALL,

Rocki

I couldn't agree with you more Rocki! If people are happy, then how does that impact other people negatively? I'll never understand the igorance of some people. It's really sad.

Another thing that makes this issue even more disturbing is that another state even passed a proposition that would ban a same sex couple from adopting a child! What gives us the right to deny a home to a child who desperately needs one just because the parents to be are of the same sex? Chances are there would be a lot more love in that family than in a lot of others that child could be placed into. No child should be denied that opportunity!

You are my hero Rocki! Yay!!

Unfortunately, it won't be an overnight change. People fear what they don't understand. Look how long African Americans fought to have rights! Now there's one in the White House! I never thought I'd see the day, ya know? With you as a cheerleader, it will happen. IT WILL! I'm right behind ya baby!!

And Mark: I completely, 1000% agree with you man! Awesome post!

You guys rock my socks!! Whoot!
Have a great day!!

i am feeling this same sense of great happiness tinged with despair at the thought that so many people in this country of ours are willing to legislate other peoples' rights and the rights of the poor children this way. i hope that we can continue on the path of progress and stamping out ignorance. thank you for sharing!

You can count on me as well Rocki! Throughout my life I've shared beautiful friendships with gay and straight friends alike. We are ALL people and deserve the same rights. I'm sorry this passed but together we CAN make a difference.

I believe we awoke to a new world this morning. It feels different. And Obama said it best when he said the changes we seek may not happen in a year or two or even in a term but they will come. Just think of the scene I quoted a few months ago, if you build it they will come. Our dreams and the dreams of our children, will come Rocki, they're closer than they've ever been before.

I agree with Mark completely, ignorance and stupidity should be abolished and in time it may very well be!

One step forward and on back. We are finally overcoming our fear of people with different skin color. It took a long time. And in time we will overcome our collective fear of people with different sexual preferences. I see a day after several new appointments to the Supreme Court that these laws will be overturned. Its just going to take time and people like us talking about how wrong it is. Staying involved now is the important next step, only then can we change what is still wrong.

ahhh Rocki. You're a great mom. Its all about religion and insecurities and fear. I hate that people feel the need to change a Constitution. And are judgemental toward gay. And hate that people feel the need to say "some of my best friends are gay", feeling the need to classify their friendship. I have so many thoughts on this subject. I agree with you and yey Bullwinkle.

You guys ROCK, truly you do. I would comment back on each and every one of your comments, but I'm afraid that I would get very wordy as this subject is very close to heart.

I appreciate your kindness, thoughts and comments. I love you hubby! Oh, not Sharon's hubby, my hubby. Oh, I love you too D, but in a different way. Okay, I better zip it - it's getting weird ;)

I couldn't agree with you more. Just when you think we have all moved to a place where we are less judgmental, something comes along and reminds us otherwise.

You know where I stand on this topic, Debi, and I was not going to post about Prop 102 because I know me and you know me and my mouth! So, I will try my best to comment cleanly....

I am extremely frustrated and disgusted with several so-called AMERICAN people. Americans have become greedy, selfish, discriminative (oh, but GOD help them if THEY are discriminated against), racist, hypocrites...I can go on and on about these A-HOLES who feel that they have the right to decide if a gay couple can be married. WELL...anyone who voted for one man-one woman.... I am disgusted that any human being could vote this way when it’s not your decision anyway!

I don't want to hate people but I will be honest when I say that Prop 102 caused quite a bit of rage and hate to run through my heart. I don't like it. I don't want to feel this way. But it hurts me so much that another human being can decide on whether two people, who love each other, can never say "WE DO". Why??? Can anyone give me a realistic reason why other than, "It's not right"? Give me one DAMN REASON!

What if there was a proposition to ban all religions? Have you physically seen your God or higher being? No. But you BELIEVE and you go to church. However there are others who do not believe in religion...so since they do not believe in it then it must be OK to try and ban religion since it was OK for YOU to vote for something YOU do not believe in to be banned. H Y P O C R I T E S!
